2012 Fails / Propadáky roku 2012 (part two)

Standard

Ok, after the previous rather expensive hand treatment this thing is from drugstore and my expectations weren’t that high. But I have to confess that on general level I quite like Garnier and use quite a few of their products so while I didn’t expect a holy grail status I din’t think this could be such a fail. So let me tell you something about:

Garnier: UltraLift Swirl 2in1 Serum plus cream – Night

They say: UltraLift Swirl is a quick and effective solution to fight against the principle signs of ageing without complicating your anti-wrinkle routine. No need to worry about layering a serum with a cream.

I say: Well,I say that I should’ve known better when something claims to be 2in1 it usually is a disaster and for a good reason. Mixing together two different products results in none of them working properly and just being...blah. Which is exactly the case here. Again, this is not a disastrous product but one that somehow manages not to do a thing. I got it hoping it would be more nourishing than my skin care at that time. So, if you ask : does it hydrate? I have to say no, not really. Is it nourishing? Not at all. Does it feel smoothing? Not even a little bit. I cannot address the lifting action but I cannot imagine that either. I was hoping it would plump up my skin and make it softer to the touch since there are some silicones present but not even that. It could work as a primer over already hydrated skin.

Oh, and then there is the scent. Yes, I am fully aware of Garnier’s policy of soaking their products in fragrance but I never really had a reaction to them or found them unpleasant. Well, this time it is unpleasant. It’s just really strong for me and I wouldn’t even want to use it on my hands. I wish I could say something nice… the swirly thing looks pretty-ish? 😉

garnier

Jo a ta vůně.

Winter skin care routine / Zimní péče o pleť

Standard

Hey ladies, enjoying winter? I am… just my skin is not on very friendly terms with winter. Gets really cranky. Dehydrated even dry, tight, oversensitive, red and peeling… well, at least that used to be the case till I discovered a few things that really seem to work for me in this icy season.

Garnier Essentials Sensitive: is basically two phase lotion that usually is intended for eye make-up removing but this large bottle is designed for a very gentle make-up removing of the whole face. I use it mostly for my eyes and it does a good job removing even waterproof mascara. Perfume free, contains some silicones.

Saloos Bio Argan Revital: I cannot figure out anywhere whether it is 100% argan oil or argan with other added oils. Nevertheless it’s a very nourishing oil that doesn’t feel heavy on my face but wouldn’t use in for my hair. I only wish the fragrance would be different.

Balea Anti blemish roll-on: the actual application can be a pain since the ball rolls unpredictably but it works. If you attack any pimple at the beginning with this chances are you won’t see it for too long. The surface ones disappear the same day. And for 2 euros/39 crowns it’s worth trying.

Pai Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser: still the gentlest make-up remover that works I have ever come across. I don’t use it for my eys though and with heavier make-up you may need to use the muslin cloth in order to remove it all. Love the soothing scent too, no too heavy.

Pai Chamomile & Rosehip Sensitive Skin Cream: my favourite product from the Pai trio I use. The scent feels divine yet very light. It’s so nourishing without being heavy or oily and instantly calms my irritated and tight skin. I used it on little dinosaur’s wind burns and his skin was calm within an hour.

Pai Bio-Regenerate Rosehip Oil: contains trans retinoic acid that is supposed to fight wrinkles as retinol without the irritation. Feels soothing and my skin looks bright in the morning with much less redness on my cheeks.

What are your favourite products for winter?

A taky krásně voní.

Czech beauty box

Standard

The Czechland is finally a part of the global beauty world and now we have officially two beauty box subscription services here, one is called LadyBox (LB) and the other SenzaBox. I definitely prefer the second name and most of English speaking people know probably why (if you don’t…well, in some parts of the English speaking world ladybox can be a slang name for the unmentionable part of lady’s body) and my husband had a good giggle when I proudly announced that I am getting my Ladybox in the mail today…let’s move on.

This is their first issue and I have to admit I decided to purchase only after I saw on various Czech blogs what’s really in there. Don’t get me wrong, I like surprises but I was worried that I may get a box full of drugstore samples. The box costs 299Czk/$15 which I find very reasonable price to pay.

So what’s in there?

~ SebaMed Olive Face & Body Wash 20ml

~ SebaMed Hand+Nail Balm 10ml – both samples seem nice but I somehow feel like they do not belong into “luxury” beauty box

~ ColorClub mini nail polish 7ml in Secret Agent – great choice, I really like CC nail polishes in general, color is gorgeous and just perfect for fall

~ Garnier BB cream in light 50ml – as most bloggers already said I also find Garnier’s bb cream to be a bit of a misjudgment here, it doesn’t fit the luxury image LB  is trying to make for themselves and is very unpopular among in the Czech blogging world even though I happen to kinda like it

~ Pure Fiji body butter in Starfruit infusion 59ml- I had once bought Pure Fiji body butter and wasn’t impressed with the scent, luckily this smells amazing, very fruity and fresh… only pet peeve I have is that the protective tint foil inside was torn and it felt like someone has already opened it

~ Nobilis Tilia – balsamic cream with Aloe Vera and goat’s whey Elisabeth 50ml – this is the main reason I decided to get this box. The moisturizer on its own costs as much as the box and Nobilis Tilia is an excellent Czech aromatherapy and organic skincare brand. The cream feels soothing and doesn’t smell as strongly of lavender as I was worried.

~ Iswari  organic raw not roasted cocoa breakfast mix– I really want to say something original finally but everything has been already said and so many times… This seems like an odd choice for a beauty box but I guess I appreciate the original thought here as it is not something I would try on my own. I wish I could tell somehow how to eat this…sprinkle on yoghurt? With muesli? Next time a not of “how to” would be useful.

All in all I really enjoy this box and will most likely get another one. Does the Czech version compare to the beauty boxes you are used to? Let me know what you think!

No tak dál.Od značky Sebamed jsou tu hned dva kousky: Balzám na ruce a nehty 10ml a Mycí emulze na obličej a tělo solivovým olejem 20ml, ráda vyzkouším, tuhle značku mám ráda, i když nespadá do kolonky luxusní kosmetiky. No jo, už jdu na Garnier BB krém. Jedno z toho to bude. No naštěstí já jejich bb krém mám docela ráda a i kdyby ne, pár kamarádek okolo mě určitě.

Abych nezapomněla, LB můžete objednat zde a stojí 299kč.

Máte LB taky? Líbil? Nelíbil? Povídejte, přeháňejte…

GREEDWhat is the most expensive and inexpensive product I own?

The most expensive is Estee Lauder eye shadow palette in Blue Dahlia. I think it was a LE in 2010. I am usually an all-for-neutral kind-of-girl and couldn’t imagine using the dark blue and teal eye shadow…and yet, it was so pretty I couldn’t resist. So, what the heck…And oddly enough I have been using it ever since at least once a week. It’s one of my all time favorite products and all in all well worth the money. I like to use the dark blue or teal as an eye liner. The white eye shadow is actually just a transparent veil of the finest teal and blue shimmer. So pretty! And the black eye shadow is my favorite shadow for smokey look or for softening up a harsh liquid eye liner. The eye shadows are very well pigmented and smooth but not as buttery as some other brands, I actually happen to like this or even prefer this texture.

The most inexpensive thing is by Essence, from the Rebels collection and it’s a lip&cheek pot in 01 peach punk. I would say it’s more a coral than peach but it’s pretty enough for summer. You need to work it a bit to pull off a smooth & even coverage as it is a slightly streaky… but for 20Czk ($1) I can cope with it.

WRATH: Love&hate relationship products?

Well, that would have to be luminizers and brighteners. I love the idea, I love the look of them and I rarely like them on my face. I guess having larger pores and oilier skin 4 months in a year just doesn’t go well with shimmer, even the finest one. Nowadays I can use some in winter and very, very sparingly so. This one is MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Shimpagne. I still haven’t found a way how to use it without having pores the size of a cricket ball …but it is too pretty to say goodbye to it, right?

GLUTTONY: What is my most delicious item?

This may sound weird to some but I really don’t like when product have a strong taste or smell. No fragrance and no artificial flavor is preferable to me. I think the problem is that most flavors are just way too artificial for me, why would anyone want to eat plastic strawberries?

SLOTH: What products am I too lazy to use?

Lipstick. I love the look of perfectly painted lips. But that is the problem. I only like it when it’s perfectly done and that takes some time (base, contouring, powder etc.) and I just cannot be bothered most of the time. Lip balm or lip gloss is so much easier.

PRIDE: What beauty item gives me the biggest self-confidence boost?

For me I feel the most confident when my skin looks the best so when it comes to make-up this translates into foundation, concealer and powder. Anything that creates the most flawless skin possible. I guess it comes from those days when acne was my constant companion and even now my skin  is far from perfect. And at this moment these products are working for me –  though I am, as ever, on a hunt for even better ones (who isn’t?).

(From left: Rimmel Match Perfection Found. and concealer, Garnier BB cream for combo/oily skin, MAC Select Moisturecover NC20, MAC Matchmaster found. 1,5, Rimmel Stay Matte powder)

LUST: What do I lust after?

Well, how much time do you have?  Ok, I will try to be reasonable (a bit of an oxymoron when it comes to lust). I would like to get my hands on some Dior eye shadow palette, NARS bronzer in Laguna, Benefit blush Corallista or a perfume that will blow my socks off (don’t know which one it is yet). But in general, you put it in a cute box, it looks pretty and smell good…I need it!

Apparently the other version of this one is what attracts you to the opposite sex? (I assume you don’t want to hear about natural procreational instinct or Freud’s libido) It has to be that magic mixture of self-confidence, humour, intelligence, generosity, kindness and a laid-back attitude… and obviously some physical attraction. I am very modest, I know.

ENVY: What items would I like to receive as a gift?

Not sure how the question goes with the subject but… I don’t know actually. Besides make-up and beauty related items, house in New Zealand, a new car and a few plane tickets to travel a bit… I would like a new iPhone and an iPad. No, rather a new iPhone. If I get an iPad I will never get a chance to play with it in this household 😉

A few bits & pieces

Standard

This is no major haul rather “replacing essentials and getting a few perk-me-ups” kind of thing. Obviously I also belong into that category of women who buy themselves something small (or big) when they need a little pick me up, when in need of consolation, as a reward or a treat, also shopping can be a good way how not to kill your partner … actually, it’s rather hard to think of a situation when shopping is not an appropriate answer to any situation life throws at us (well, being completely broke or heading that way would probably qualify – which is not that difficult with above mentioned life philosophy). So I am really trying to not to spend much…which I manage…per shopping…but in the end I am worried I could have gotten one thing from my dream shopping list instead of the myriads of little bits I get in the meantime. One day I will get the hang of it…one can only hope ;).

Vichy Normaderm Deeply purifying gel

This was actually given to me from a friend. I never liked these anti-blemish gels as they always dried my skin and it felt like 3 sizes smaller afterwards. This one really surprised me, no itching, no drying and my problematic spots actually do look better. Smells nice too.

Garnier PureActiv 24 moisturizing gel

I don’t know how this is called on UK/US market, hope the picture helps. I needed something for my congested area along my jaw line and cheeks and while it is your typical alcohol based gel it doesn’t irritate my skin in the least. If it really works I will know after a few weeks.

Manufaktura: Grapefruit & Verbena shower gel and shampoo + hand cream

I got this today so I cannot say anything more than: this smells gorgeous! I was looking for some kind of “wake-me-up-in-the-morning” shower gel and this super fresh yet slightly sweet scent is perfect. And I really like the design. The scent of the hand cream reminds of Crabtree & Evelyn Citron hand cream. The Manufaktura scent is bit sharper and not as mellow as C&E but if you cannot splurge on C&E definitely try this one. It’s also slightly less nourishing but the difference is so small it doesn’t warrant the price difference in my opinion.

Dove Silk & Sleek shampoo & “onlygodknowswhat”

I needed a shampoo after my disaster with Matrix Total Results Moisture shampoo. Probably THE worst shampoo I ever had. I will rant about that one later. But I didn’t want to spend the money on Joico even though I knew I should. I got these in a drugstore as some people with dry frizzy hair seemed to like it. I tried it only once  and so far I do like it. I’m surprised. Though my problem is that at the beginning I like everything… well, apart from that Matrix. I’ll keep you posted.

Also you may wonder what   “onlygodknowswhat” actually is. Well, the clever heads at Unilever got a splendid idea of putting together a conditioner and a mask. Why, is beyond me. It’s not like a conditioner and a mask are all that different in the first place. Or am I missing something here? I used it as a conditioner and my hair felt very soft and smooth. The scent of both of these products is that very typical Dove scent: floral clean. I happen to like it a lot though for the perfume savvy gals  this may feel too ordinary.

Dove Purely pampering shower cream Almonds and hibiscus

Another “motivation” to get me out of bed in the morning since it smells nice. I like Dove shower creams in general. I wish they made a body lotion or cream in the Purely pampering scents as well.

Gabriella Salvete Enamel in 156 and 157

You can read about no.156 here and see pictures of 157 here. I haven’t tried no.157 hoping it will have all the great qualities of 156 as well.

O.P.I  Gouda gouda two shoes & Red lights ahead…where?

I’m in love with the Holland collection and I’m already plotting to buy at least three more colors from it. Gouda gouda two shoes is a color I would not usually go for. But…after seeing some pictures (like this one) and realizing there is the tiniest bronze-y  pink shimmer in it I caved in. And I’m so glad I did. This is my new go-to-color when I want something subtle, elegant but not boring.

On the other hand, Red lights ahead…where? falls exactly and perfectly into my favourite nail polish color category. I love cremes and brights and this is both, bright coral red creme. It’s perfect for me.

I have to admit I had some issues with the application. I haven’t had OPI for a while and got used to a different kind of brush and texture. I may slightly prefer Essie brush and on some of my finger nails I struggle with the wide OPI brush. The texture is also runnier that I am used to lately. It’s not that it’s bad but after being used to Essie where I need  like two three strokes and voila! it’ds done..I find I really have to concentrate in order not to paint my cuticles again.

I will try to upload some good pictures tomorrow as you have to see these two beauties on, the bottle and even the cute names do not give them justice.

Douglas Absolute Nails 145

This color was supposed to be my dupe for OPI Siberian nights but it’s not a deep blueberry as the OPI is but rather a deep purple/black with the tiniest purple shimmer, I haven’t tried it yet.

Garnier BB Cream: just a few thoughts

Standard

I know the BB craze is in a full swing so I am rather late to the party yet some of my friends have other hobbies apart from being obsessed with beauty products and they may still appreciate a few thoughts on this particular product.

As most of you know this is Garnier’s version of Asian BB creams. BB cream originally means either Beauty Balm  or Blemish Balm (that is targeted more for young and problematic skin). It’s a moisturizer, tint, sun protection (usually 30-50 spf)  with whitener (in Asian products) or illuminator and antioxidants in one package to create “your skin but better” finish.

The Garnier BB cream comes (at least here, in Europe) in two shades, light and light/medium. I chose the light one and you may be surprised that the actual potion in this shade looks quite dark, don’t worry, it melts in. I’m usually MAC Nc20 or 1,5 and this light shade is a good match for me. It feels smooth when applied on, not heavy in silicones and settles into satin finish with a subtle glow. So far I like it. When used alone it lasts 6 or so hours and then it disappears. I like to use it with a concealer and powder on top, MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, and that makes it last for almost the whole day. Just a word of warning: it doesn’t seem to like to be layered over any heavier base such as a natural oil or heavier spf as it tends to settle into pores and look rather uneven.

There is fragrance and while it’s a pretty citrusy fresh scent it may not be suitable for fragrancephobes ;). Though once applied on your face it vanishes in a second.

Obviously it won’t cover any major imperfection. The sides of my face have many red marks and that doesn’t get covered. But it creates an even look with a subtle glow making it perfect for days when you’re lazy, in a hurry, are on vacations where you don’t want to apply foundation every morning, if you are not fond of wearing foundation or if you’re lucky enough to have a (near)perfect skin.

It doesn’t seem to clog my pores, make me more oily and my skin had no issues with sensitivity.

So, do I have any pet peeve with Garnier’s BB cream? Yes… spf 15??? Really? In the day & age when lipsticks, hand creams and everything you look at including even shoe polish (well, probably…) has an spf  of 15 and the Asian BBs start at 30, Garnier cannot do better than 15? So I still have to put my spf 50 on before this one and that kind of defeats the whole purpose of using a BB cream in the first place. It would be perfect for summer when you can’t be bothered with foundation… or for vacations… but the UVA/UVB protection is just too low. So, Garnier, how about spf 30? It’s not too high for those who still want to tan and it’s not too low for those who prefer to shield themselves from sun.

I still like it but may actually have a look at the Asian market for a BB cream with a better sun protection for summer.

Do you use any BB cream? What is your favorite?

New additions: bath, body & hair

Standard

I’m not going to call it a haul since I have accumulated all these things within 6-7 weeks. It’s also not going to be a thorough review on each and every single item, just a quick scoop. And if you want to hear more about a particular product let me know in the comments and I can either reply to you there or if more of you will be interested about a particular item I’ll do a proper review.

I’m also sorry for the poor quality of pictures, my camera said goodbye yesterday and my iPhone is very old and sad. I already have an eye on a new camera so hopefully the quality is going to improve soon.

Kamill Hand & Nailcream Intensive

I needed a small size tube for my handbag and picked this one on a whim. It’s very moisturizing and while the scent is quite nice it’s way too strong for me. Won’t repurchase.

Amia Hand Balm

That tiny little jar is packed with super thick potion for dry and cracked hands. That is my hands, I’m afraid. The scent is ok and quite subtle (yay!). I don’t use it for the whole of my hands, only on my cuticles and it does a decent job. It’s very inexpensive (49 kc / $2) and it’s something I may get again.

Matrix Moisture Cure 2 Phase Treatment

The only reason I got this along with the shampoo was that it was discounted. I needed a shampoo and this came almost free. You shake the bottle and spray a few times onto your towel-dried hair. I was pleasantly surprised. The scent is very fresh and pleasant and it actually does make my hair soft and shiny. I din’t notice and weigh-down or build-up. I almost feel like I don’t need oils for my dry hair anymore.

Matrix Total Results Moisture Shampoo

While the spray was a pleasant and (almost) free surprise, the shampoo is … just blah. Smells good but can be too strong for some people. My favourite shampoo of all time is Joico Moisture recovery. I tell you why: you need the tiniest amount to wash your hair, smells great without being overpowering but mainly, makes my dry hair supple, shiny, touchable. Matrix Moisture shampoo on the other hand: you need much more product to do the job (even drugstore’s Elseve doesn’t require as much) and you need to do it twice. Makes your hair clean without stripping them, no squeaky clean feeling but I also didn’t feel like it did anything in the moisturizing departement. My last objection: it’s the second time I have a Matrix/Biolage shampoo and I always end up with quite some dandruff. And I am starting to think it’s not a coincidence.

AA Cosmetics Nature Spa Sensitive – Nourishing hand cream, Blueberry

This cream is for sensitive hands prone to allergy as it contains no allergens, parabens, color additives, mineral oil, alcohol, silicones, preservatives, etheric oils, propylene glycol and PEG. The list of non-existing ingredients is almost longer than the list of existing ones. Feels very soothing, once applied hands feel super nourished. Unfortunately on my super dry hands the effect doesn’t last too long. The scent is very fruity – blueberry, but not strong. Reminds me of a subtler version of The Body Shop body butter’s scents.

Garnier Body Intensive 7 Days Body Milk with Mango Oil for dry and rough skin

This is my favorite body moisturizer at this moment. I LOVE the scent, yes very fruity, definitely mango there. Feels light to the point I was skeptical how such a runny milk can do anything for my dry skin esp. for my dry shins. And yet, my skin is perfectly moisturized without any oiliness and stickiness. I’m on my third bottle.

Garnier Body Intensive 7 Days Hand Cream with Mango Oil for dry and rough skin

If I LOVE the body milk I logically have to love the hand cream as well…right? Well, not necessarily. While it’s of fluffy buttery  texture it also soaks in immediately, smells as great as the body milk, but leaves slightly sticky residue that dissipates  within 5 minutes on the skin but the residue stays on polished nails and feels very odd. I’ll use it up as it smells great but will not repurchase.

Dove Purely Pampering Nourishing Shower Gel – Coconut Milk with Jasmine Petals

I really like Dove shower creams and I almost never go for anything with coconut. Most coconut scents are too artificial and cloying to me. This one is on the edge, a bit more and I would have to write it off as well, but maybe adding the jasmine into the scent makes it very comforting scent. The texture and performance is the same as their Indulgence shower cream. A nice everyday shower gel.

Crabtree & Evelyn Goatmilk Comforting Body Wash

This was a gift from a dear friend, she couldn’t handle the scent. I’m not surprised. It’s definitely not what I imagine when you say “comforting”. This scent is very strong, in your face with a very good (or bad?) staying power. The scent reminds me of  old fashioned parfumery shops. It’s not unpleasant but it’s not for everyone. The best thing about this wash is how tiny amount you need to create super thick soothing foam. The original price for this wash is rather high for me but considering how very long this will last you it’s actually not that bad. It’s slightly moisturizing, no tightness afterwards.

Crabtree & Evelyn Goatmilk Comforting Body Lotion

This is more like gel-lotion that absorbs instantaneously, leaves no residue, the same scent that will last all day on your skin and clothes. I was worried my dry skin could feel tight and it just wouldn’t be enough. I was quite wrong. The moisturizing effect lasts easily to the next shower. While I love what both products do next time I may have a look at the Aloe Vera range for fresher scent.

Do you have any experience with any of these products or do you have any suggestion for my super dry hands? I would love to hear from you in the comments 🙂
